So I guess it is that time of year again, where families come together, celebrate the birth of Jesus, hang the star upon the tree and exchange gifts and cards. Christmas 2011 brings us to a close of the year 2011, where so much has happened.
During the festive season, in the Philippines as well as here in the UK we have Simbang Gabi which is where we all attend masses from as early as the 16th December until the 24th December, as this is one of the important practices in our Catholic faith.
Noche Buena is a tradition followed on Christmas Eve where families would have a meal together at around midnight.
Christmas, for me, sees me and my family come together. My mum and dad take time off work, and with no school or university, my sisters are home too. I am sure its the same for every other family this year too?
But, I know that for some of us Filipinos living away from Philippines, there is a slight gap in our hearts, with our family still in the Philippines. There are families who travel back to the Philippines for the holidays, but for others it isnt always the case.
Christmas is a season where families come together therefore if you are planning a trip back to the Philippines in the near future, check out the latest fare of Royal Brunei Airlines!
www.bruneiair.com/uk
Last week, we saw a typhoon hit the Southern part of the Philippines. The Philippines has currently stated that the death toll will soon rise to 1,000.
According to the Philippine Red Cross, the number of people missing has reached as high as 800.
www.redcross.org.ph/
Please click on the link above for more information on how to donate money to help the Philippines. It is at this time that we send all our prayers and thoughts out to them. We ask that they may still have a holy and peaceful Christmas, especially for the children.
May God be with them during this season, keeping our families back home safe and sheltered this Christmas and New Years.

I wish you all a Holy Christmas and a prosperous New Year,
God Bless,

Well, I was honestly really impressed! The journey from London to Manila involves a flight from London to Brunei with a short refuelling in Dubai.
The flight from London to Dubai was on a 777 aircraft which was clean, comfortable, modern with a lovely friendly crew and nice decor. We were served with regular drinks some snacks and the meals on board were nice as well, just the right amount, nothing too heavy and the no alcohol policy is fine as drinking alcohol on flights causes dehydration anyway!!!
Loved the fact that before departing on each sector, the flight is blessed! Whatever your personal religous beliefs or even if you don't have any, it was just comforting to know that someone was praying for your journey!
Every flight sector was on time and very smooth take off and landing and all very efficient. When we arrived in Dubai there was just over an hour, I was able to leave my bags on board the plane which was great! I love Dubai airport and was great to meet so many Pinoys there as well. Had time for a quick cup of coffee and then a short walk before boarding again to Brunei.

As you may know, Sambat Trust started after I treated my Mum,for Xmas 2006, to a trip home to the Philippines.
One story Mum told me from her holiday was of Johaini, a young girl in Mums village who was not in school and learning because her family couldn't afford it.
I decided to do something.
I asked family and friends for their support.
That first year, 36 children were able to go to school. Johaini was one of them.
Thanks to you, Sambat Trust is growing: we are establishing school libraries, granting scholarships and training teachers.
Over 2,000 children now have the opportunity to read children's books in school!

I love visiting the Philippines at Christmas, in fact the build up to Pasko started in September!
Pinoy's love Christmas, a time to get together with extended family, attending a Simbang Gabi mass, giving and receiving gifts and even hanging out at one of the many Malls up and down the country!
Its also a time to make and display the filipino Christmas lantern or Parol as it is know as back home. I have even tried to make one once but got covered in glue haha.
Btw if you are planning a trip back home in the near future, check out the latest special fare of Royal Brunei Airlines from £569, even includes extra luggage allowance so you could bring all your Christmas gifts!

Debuts.
Hello my readers,
Sorry it has been a good few months since my last blog, but university has certainly kept me occupied! I struggled to think about what my next blog should be about, and have decided to blog about debuts. Im not an expert of debuts, but Ive tried my best for this blog!
The celebration of a girls 18th birthday party is a great Philippine tradition. It is on some way similar to the Spanish Quinceanera which is celebrated on a girls 15th birthday. The Philippine traditional debut would consist of the debutant having 9 roses and 9 candles, in some cases there would be 18 roses and 18 candles. The roses and candles would all wear similar clothing sticking to a simple dress code whilst the debutant would wear a bold and beautiful dress.
The roses would each have a dance with the debutant and the candles would say a speech. There would also be a partner dance featuring the roses, candles, debutant and her escort. There would also be a traditional father daughter dance too.
Family and friends would come to the celebration and have a sit down meal and then a party towards the end.
That, is the traditional formality of a debut, however, in the last year where Ive seen all my friends turn 18 including myself, I feel as though the tradition of a debut has got lost within this generation.
I turned 18 at the beginning of this year, and instead of going with a simple dress code I went and also incorporated a theme of Alice in Wonderland. In the other debuts I have attended they all had a dress code but for their roses and candles, however they were not as strict as not all the roses and candles stuck to the code.
You would traditionally expect a debut to take place in a great hall or even a hotel, however mine took place in a cafe bar. One of the debuts I went to this year however did take place in a hotel.
I personally, did not stick to the traditional version for I did not have a sit down menu with Filipino food, but more a buffet of cold food (sandwiches etc) that people could take when they were hungry. I did a quick dance with each of my roses and then had I had my candles speeches. It was soon after that, that my debut turned into a rave.
One debut that I attended as well as my own, did not invite many family or relatives to the debuts which is a shame because a debut it supposed to be a celebration where you invite all the people that have been there for you throughout your life.
All in all, I know this blog isnt as good as my others. But, I still found this an issue. That the girls in this generation have stopped following the traditional Philippine debut and have opted in making their own version of how they want their debut to be. May it be due to financial reasons, social reasons or personal reasons. Perhaps, we should all encourage young pinays to consider following the tradition?

Looking forward to watching boxing legend, Congressman and Pride of the Philippines Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao, up against Juan Manuel Marquez this weekend?
Well, some people recently commented that they might try to watch the match via some online streaming sites, my opinion is that the quality of picture is often poor, with loads of adverts and just as Manny would take the winning punch, the site goes down or the picture freezes! (Trust me lol)
To ensure perfect uninterrupted coverage, the fight is viewable exclusively on Primetime on the 12th November.
You can order the card for only £14.95 by calling 0871 200 4444*, or visiting http://www.primetimelive.co.uk/
Virgin Media customers can purchase using the On Demand menu.
Customers on Sky must register the first time they use Primetime and once registered can purchase using the box office menu.

I would like to invite all Filipinos in the United Kingdom and British friends of the Philippines to come out and support the Philippines' participation in the Lord Mayor's Show on Saturday 12th November 2011, from 10:00 AM until 2:30 PM.
This will be the first time that the Philippines will participate in the 800-year old parade and presents the new Lord Mayor of London, and runs from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice and back.
The Philippine Embassy and the Department of Tourism (London) are pleased to present the fruition of the collaboration with the Filipino community organizations that has created a float showcasing the sights and sounds of our country to the British people.
Entitled Colours of the Philippines, the float was conceived by Filipino-British designer Rodrigo Enriquez, who also designed one of the 29 commemorative 50p coins of the London 2012 Olympics.
The float will feature popular Filipino-British celebrities, and will escorted by the Lahing Kayummangi dance troupe, Doce Pares fighting club, Philippine Generations and sectoral representatives of Filipino workers in the country.
For more details, please visit the Embassy on Facebook at www.facebook.com/PhilippineEmbassyLondon and on Twitter at @PhilEmbLondon and #PinoyLordMayors.
I look forward to seeing you at this landmark event to cheer our float along the parade route and help promote the beauty and excellence of the Philippines.

This lady went to Alabama to marry her husband and travelled there to be with him, he now wants a divorce and has left her on her own. She says she has little to no work and no phone. Pretty much just stuck there with no real friends or family.
Think she is just looking for some friends and advice, she seems pretty much stranded. The contact details provided are of the man who contacted me about her, he is not a Filipino but found my website through the internet, if you have any contacts in the U.S please contact him for her details!

To the Philippine Islamic community
On the observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan
[Manila, July 30, 2011]
I extend my heartfelt salaam to the Muslim-Filipino community, as you observe the holy month of Ramadhan.
Your devotion to perform the essential requisites of Islam, such as the holy fasting, is an inspiring deed that attests to your reverence for the Almighty. Your steadfastness in your sacrifice during the 29 days of Ramadhan is also by itself an opportunity for enlightenment. Apart from being a personal quest of faith, Ramadhan serves as a representation of peace, as Muslims around the world embody the spirit of solidarity in this moment of glorification.

Word of advice to those in the community who wish to do any of the following:
Give out any flyers
Sell tickets
Sell T-shirts
Give out CD's or promo stuff
word of warning!!! If you are not a stall holder or have been officially authorised by either the Philippine Centre or abs-cbn, your materials will be confiscated and may be destroyed by security!
Have seen loads of facebook and twitter messages about various tickets on sale etc, it's really not worth doing it! sorry guys!

If you are travelling to the Philippine Centre Barrio Fiesta Sa London this weekend, please ensure that you check with transport for London, at www.tfl.gov.uk.
There is some disruption to the Piccadilly line due to ongoing engineering works due to the tube upgrade. Alternatively if you are travelling from London you could catch a train from Waterloo to Hounslow train station and then ask for directions to Lampton Park which is around a 15 minute walk.

What can I say, apart from the basics? My name is Norresa Perucho and I am an 18 year old student living in West London. I am full Filipina, however my fluency in tagalog is not that great!
I am hoping to attend university in September, studying Journalism, hence the reason I thought I could benefit from writing for Fil-Event.com
It will be a great experience for me as a writer as well as benefiting the website for I shall be able to keep my readers up to date on local events, news and entertainment.

I opened the Avantgarde show to an eager audience, who were a mixture of friends, industry guests and regular party-goers, most of which have not seen my set before, as well as the loyal fans from previous gigs who came back for more!
