Pinoy At Heart, Malcolm Conlan Appears In an OPM Music Video

I have to be honest. I have always been a fan of Philippine culture, film and music. My first OPM tape I heard around 25 years ago featured ‘Anak’ by Freddie Aguilar. I can understand a little Tagalog, but to be honest, I can enjoy music in any language; as long as that music or song tells a story, I’m hooked…

So to have been invited to play a small part in telling a story of love — for me love of Philippine culture — is such a privilege. I was first approached by singer/songwriter LJ Manzano earlier this year, around seven months ago. LJ shared the concept with me of creating a music video and tell a story with 100 parts. I had already been a fan of his through his massive hit, Hay Nako. I have watched many videos on YouTube of groups retelling this story.

In fact, as I knew that Hay Nako had several million hits, I knew this latest song was destined to become a classic OPM hit.

I was also aware that so much hard work and dedication has gone into this project. Honestly, as soon as I heard the song at the beginning of 2015, I immediately found it fun and clever; with a catchy lyric and pleasing tune.

However, in order to feature in the video, I had to learn several lines of the song. Thing was, I only had a day to practice. So I basically ended up learning my lines overnight. The following day, I asked a work colleague of mine, Abi, to record me performing my bit.

The video even features the Mayor of Davao, Duterte… Such an honour to appear alongside the honourable Mayor.

Around 50 takes later, we had a rap and there you have it, my work was done. Again it’s an honor and privilege to have played a small part in ‘May Forever’ by LJ Manzano. Enjoy…
